Trashed
by Alison Gaylin
Trashed is Alison Gaylin’s first foray into hardcover suspense. Her previous two novels, Hide your
Eyes, which was nominated for an Edgar, and You Kill Me, were both published as mass-market
originals. This book proves that she belongs on the list of top-notch thriller writers that includes
Lisa Gardner, Tess Gerritsen, and Lisa Scottoline.
Simone Glass’s world is a mess. Fresh out of Columbia, she moves out to Los Angeles to begin her career as
a journalist. Just one problem - her employer’s businesss folds before she can even get started. In order to
pay the bills and save face, Simone takes the one job she never imagined herself in - working for an
Enquirer-like tabloid called The Asteroid. When she finds something she believes is linked to a
recent murder during her first assignment - digging through a television star’s garbage - it all goes downhill
in a hurry. The bodies begin to pile up, and Simone is right in the middle of it all.
Everything shines in Trashed. The tightly woven plot never fails, the wide ranging cast of characters
is drawn in razor sharp fashion, and Simone is a wonderfully entertaining heroine. Her attempt to maintain her
dignity while doing a job that she clearly believes is beneath her gives the story its heart and adds unexpected
depth to the novel. Gaylin’s ability to poke fun at the tabloid industry amid the suspense is much appreciated,
and her humor rears its head at just the right moments throughout the book.
Trashed is, simply put, a winner in every way./p> |
