Triple Cross
Steve Cline Series, No. 4

by Kit Ehrman

Twenty three year old Steve Cline's father, horse trainer Chris Keller, invites Steve to join him in Louisville, Kentucky for a two weeks' vacation. Kessler has a horse running in the Kentucky Derby, and when one of his employees is injured he needs a substitute he can depend upon and trust. Steve will have only two horses to care for so he will be able to devote some of his time to the final project for the private investigator's course in which he is enrolled. His project is a simple records search. This search finds Steve in a world of the ultra rich where their ambitions and greed set off murder and double dealing. Steve becomes the prime suspect in the murder investigation and is brutally attacked by thugs. He must deal with these problems and stop the murderer while he must also put to rest his own personal demons.

Ehrman has given us an on the scene picture of Louisville and the Kentucky Derby. The reader is made part of the pageantry and excitement of the Kentucky Derby and the preparation before the race. The atmosphere of the town is portrayed as well.

Ehrman has successfully assumed the mantle left by the departure of Dick Francis (though Francis has released a book after an absence of years). She conveys a sound knowledge of the world of horse racing and gives us a hero who is human, likeable and resourceful. We can only hope for more of Steve Kline's adventures in the future.
