Two Little Girls In Blue

by Mary Higgins Clark

Margaret and Steve Frawley have two beautiful three-year-old twin girls named Kelly and Kathy. They have recently moved into an old house and plan to do it up, and Steve has a new job with pensions company CFG & Y. But one night in March when the twins have just celebrated their birthdays and their parents are out at a black tie dinner in New York, the children are kidnapped. The parents come home to an unconscious babysitter, police, and a ransom request for $8 million. This seems odd as they aren’t rich people, so when Steve’s employers offer to pay the money it seems like a dream come true. But only one twin is returned, and the other one is thought to be dead. If this is true, why can Kelly sense that Kathy is still alive, and can her link with her twin help the FBI trace the kidnappers?

Mary Higgins Clark is the bestselling author of a number of suspenseful books that are beloved by millions, including many people I know, so I thought it was high time I read one too. This is certainly a page turner, and I read it with lightening speed as although I could guess the outcome - and so will you - there is plenty more to guess, such as the identity of the Pied Piper, the man who has set up the whole operation. It is easy to sympathize too with the distraught Frawleys as they agonize over whether they will see both their children again, and with the children themselves undergoing such an ordeal. My favorite feature of the book had to be the fact that although we knew what the kidnappers were up to nobody else did, and many chapters begin with new characters who think that they have some information to offer up. Thus the trail is laid that will lead - or will it? - to the culprits. This is the practised style of a pro, and it easy indeed to see why her polished and exciting books are bestsellers. If you want something original and/or thought-provoking you won’t find it here, but you will find a thrilling, straightforward read.
