The Watchman
A Joe Pike Novel

by Robert Crais

Because ex-cop Joe Pike owes a bad man a big favor, he ends up playing bodyguard to a spoiled, rich girl named Larkin Conner Barkley, who is being pursued by a vicious Ecuadorian drug lord, for reasons no one understands. Her father is a money man, too rich and busy to pay attention to his daughter, and at first glance, it looks like he's sold her out to a terrorist. But Pike is nobody's fool. Having been a soldier-of-fortune, he knows all the tricks, and the truth is, things aren't always what they seem.

Though he has little to say, he's savvy and street-smart, and will absolutely get to the bottom of this thing. Empathetic toward the girl for reasons of his own, he can't let anything happen to her. Moving from one safe house to another, barely escaping their pursuers, Pike realizes there's a mole relaying their every move. But who is it?

The words "edge-of-your-seat" scarcely describe The Watchman, where the action is measured in seconds, not hours or even minutes. In fact, Pike's character speaks in choppy short sentences that are, at times, a bit confusing, but only add to the suspense. And though the language is pretty coarse, this is one unforgettable read.
