A down on his luck homeless man, known only as the "Falcon", decides to end his life by jumping off the Powell
Bridge over Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.
After holding up the traffic for several hours, newly blind hostage negotiator Vincent Paulo manages to talk
the Falcon down.
When attorney Jack Swyteck is called in to represent Falcon, he is shocked to find Falcon not only can afford
his services but pays his $10,000 bail in cash.
What is the story of this mysterious man, who lives in an abandoned car and climbs in and out of garbage
dumpsters for his food and clothing?
Before the case is called to trial, a woman is found murdered in the trunk of the Falcon's car and he is on
the run. He soon takes several hostages, including Jack's best friend, Theo, and demands to speak to police
officer Alicia Mendoza.
Alicia is not only a police officer but the daughter of the current Mayor. In what context does the Falcon
want to see her and why does he think Jack stole all his money?
The book is a wonderful, fast-paced read with characters the reader soon comes to care about. Yes, even the
Falcon is a likeable character with ties to the horrors of the Argentine era that will soon come out.
To this reader, my favorite character was not a character in itself, but the beautiful setting so aptly
described - Miami, Florida. The many different cultures and ever changing scenery and weather were like being
on vacation right at home in my easy chair.
When Darkness falls is the sixth in a series featuring attorney Jack Swyteck but hopefully not the last.
