The serene surface of life on Broward’s Rock, South Carolina is disrupted with the news of the theft of eight 20
dollar gold Double Eagle coins valued at 2 million dollars, from the collection of Geoffrey Grant. There is no
scarcity of suspects as all of his stepchildren are there for his birthday celebration and they all need money.
At Confidential Commissions, Max Darling receives a call from a frightened sounding woman asking for his help.
Because of a previous disastrous experience with a frightened sounding woman, he refuses and tells his secretary to
tell her to call the police. The woman calls again and his secretary refers the call to Max's wife Annie. The woman
claims to have hidden something in Franklin House, which the Darlings are restoring. She is afraid. Annie rushes
to her house just in time to catch the woman's dying words.
Max's conscience bothers him as he feels he might have saved her life. So he is determined to find the murderer.
While the Darlings search their Franklin House for the hidden package, another murder occurs. They find a connection
between the murders and the stolen coins but have many suspects to study before they find the real culprit.
As usual, Death Walked In is a delightful, suspenseful mystery. The Darlings are a resourceful and loving
couple with the usual trio of friends to help them solve their mystery. The flora and fauna of the locale are
beautifully described. The descriptions make the reader wish to be there.
Let us not forget the resident felines, Agatha and Dorothy L. Annie has her usual paintings depicting a scene
from a mystery. I have read 14 Death on Demand books and I have yet to identify one of the paintings! And I thought
I knew my mysteries!
Highly recommended for a pleasant afternoon on the patio with a glass
of iced tea...
