Craig Johnson is fast becoming one of my favorite authors, following as a close second to
James Lee Burke. He has such a gift for character development and a talent for getting the
settings and scenes just right that I hate to turn the last page.
In Junkyard Dogs Walt Longmire, the sheriff of Durant, Wyoming
is called outo the local dump to investigate the dragging of an
old man, who also runs the dump, behind a 68 Tornado. Although the
old man is nearly killed the reason and outcome is almost comical.
While dealing with this Walt discovers a human thumb there at the dump and assigns his
deputy Santiago the chore of finding out if the thumb belongs to a local and if they are
dead or alive.
Through it all a local real estate developer wants to have the dump shut down and moved.
There is also a lucrative side business going on that has yet to be discovered by the Sheriff’s
Department.
Many interesting characters make return showings in the book, including Victoria, Walt’s
deputy and want-to-be-love interest, and Henry Stand Bear, a lifelong friend. And then of
course there is Dog who is, well, a dog.
I would recommend this series to any and all. Like I said, Craig Johnson
is fast becoming one of my all time favorite authors.
