It is January and bitterly cold, so Agatha Raisin thinks going
to neighboring village Winter Parva for a hog roast will be fun.
But do pigs usually have tattoos? Is there not something rather
human about the pig? It turns out that the partygoers have narrowly
missed becoming cannibals, and the body is indeed that of unpopular
policeman Gary Beech. His ex-wife, Amy, hires Agatha to investigate,
and the case is afoot once more…
Nobody, not even Sherlock himself, could guess the tortuous passage
of this case or where it will end and why. This is one of the things
that make these books a rattling good read, that and the usual other
characteristic of long running series, which is to catch up with
the doings of the various characters. We get to discover what Simon
Black has been up to, the future of the Carsely Ladies’ Society,
and who is new in the village, among other things. Britain cannot
boast the vast number of “cozies” that Americans have
to enjoy, but at least we have that national treasure, Agatha Raisin,
who is here on top form. Expect red herrings, roller coaster plot
twists and turns, and plenty of humor and satire, and you won’t
be disappointed. All in a remarkably modest length novel, too…what
more could you want?
