The 12th of Never is the latest in the adventures of the Women’s Murder Club. The story begins with the murder of a college coed, the latest in a series of such murders. Then, the story moves to Detective Lindsay Boxer, who has been assigned to the case.

Lindsay was at home, asleep, when a powerful clap of thunder and an equally powerful pain in her belly dragged her back to consciousness. She wondered what she could have eaten to cause that kind of pain. She sat up and reached for her beside lamp. A brilliant flash of lightning accompanied by a clap of thunder that shook the building and rattled the windows slowed her actions, but she switched on the lamp. Nothing happened so she tried it again. The cordless phone was out and her husband, Joe Molinari, wasn’t home. The pain had subsided by then, so she walked to the window to see how far the power outage went. She was encouraged to see that the entire city wasn’t in the dark.

The pain hit again and she quickly knew it wasn’t something she ate. The baby was coming early; her water broke! Her only communication was her cell phone and she only had about five minutes of power. A call to 911 told her there were no ambulances available to get her to the hospital. The nurse at the hospital could only tell to get there, not how she was to travel. She called her old friend, ME Dr. Claire Washburn. Claire said she’d get Lindsay to the hospital. In the meantime, Lindsay was to lie down and don’t push.

Her ride was there shortly, a huge fire truck. They got there in time to deliver the baby girl, Julie Molinari. Claire arrived in time to cut the umbilical cord. It was the first living person the medical examiner had touched in years.

Usually, the four members of the club team up to solve the difficult cases. This time, each woman has personal issues to distract her. Lindsay has a very sick baby, Claire has a missing body, Yuki’s murder trial has gone from airtight to full of holes and Cindy’s relationship with Lindsay’s partner is getting too hot for her.

The 12th of Never is a very busy novel. The plot is divided between personal issues and the serial murder case. The very end of the book solves all issues, but not until then. With the personal issues, the characters become much more human and realistic. The Los Angeles area always provides a wide variety of interesting settings. Veteran narrator January LaVoy reads the emotion into the story and brings the characters alive. Pick up a copy of The 12th of Neverand join the Women’s Murder Club.
