You
would never suspect that living on the small Lake Erie island
of South Bass, were three women from one neighborhood causing
Magistrate Alvin Littlejohn’s head to explode. Well
– it really just caused him to have a huge headache.
The ladies Bea, Kate and Chandra could not get along. They
continually brought complaints to the Mayor’s Court
about such things as too much traffic passing, peeing cats
and loud opera music. Finally Alvin did something so amazing
that it had the three women speechless. They would form a
book discussion group and meet weekly at the library to discuss
what they had read. Maybe they would learn to talk to each
other and not at each other.
At the first meeting, they are joined by Luella, a feisty
senior citizen who loves to read. The book they pick is Agatha
Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. The meeting
is cut short due to bad weather. Not one of them went home.
They all ended up at the new restaurant on the island, The
Orient Express. Strange how the women who can’t agree
on anything all love Peter Chan’s Orange Chicken. What
a shame they will never have it again, since they find Peter’s
dead body behind the counter! Bea and her fellow literary
ladies better solve this murder before the ferry starts up
again and the murderer leaves the island forever. With all
the questions being asked, Bea had better be very careful
or she could end up without a reservation.
Things to Ponder: Was Amanda really sick or just hiding from
the other guests? What did Bea do for a living before moving
to Put–in–Bay? Can you really stop a cat from
peeing on the flowers? Was the murderer a guest staying at
the B&B?
I loved this book. I don’t remember ever reading a mystery
where the people solving it dislike each other. They have
to put aside their differences and work as a team. This was
a fast paced page turner of a read. There is plenty of Orange
Chicken….I mean Red Herrings to keep you guessing until
the very end. So if you like your mystery with a side of egg
rolls, then you should be reading Mayhem At The Orient
Express. The author has told me that the next book in
the series will be out in February 2014 and the title is A
Tale of Two Biddies. If, like me, you can’t wait
that long for your next Kylie Logan fix then, be on the lookout
for her new Chili Cook-off Mysteries series - the first one
will be out in October 2013 and is called Chili Con Carnage.
