The
word "alert" usually means: warning something has
occurred; move to a safe place. In the case of bombings, shootings,
and high-tech attacks, "alert" is an understatement.
Alert
begins with Detective Michael Bennett leaving Ireland without
his nanny /girlfriend, Mary Catherine. Upon his return, Michael
has to search for his missing grandfather and hires a temporary
nanny for his ten children. Back on the job, he witnesses
the murder of a politician first hand, chases down terrorists
and fears not only for his family, but all of New York. Michael
lucks out when FBI's Emily Parker returns to help him with
the case. It's like old times, minus the sexual attraction.
The two chase down a couple of intelligent, heartless terrorists
before they bring New York to its knees for good. Their hunt
for the terrorists is well paced throughout the book. The
terrorists' evil deeds bleed off the page. On the personal
side: when an alert is sent out to evacuate the city, the
Bennett family, minus Michael, hits the road, and like others
in the city they eventually run out of gas and safe places.
It's certainly an apocalyptic scene.
Patterson
gives readers a what-if factor with Alert. It's a
storyline of set ups, close calls, shocking deliveries and
cliff hangers. Fair warning for those prone to nightmares
about the future, you might want to have your therapist available
once you're done.
Audio
Narration by Danny Mastrogiorgio and Henry Leyva, as well
as the background effects, amp up the intensity of the subject
matter. Alert is one unforgettable listen. You'd
be a fool to miss it.
