Brooklyn
Wainwright is a bookbinder extraordinaire, and is thrilled
to have the opportunity to do book appraisals on the TV show
“This Old Attic.” She will work with rare books,
and advise the owners of their value, while enhancing her
own reputation onscreen. What fun!
The first
book she appraises is a signed copy of The Secret Garden,
by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The woman, who brings the book,
Vera Stoddard, claims to have purchased the volume for three
dollars at a yard sale. After the show airs, a violent man
attacks Brooklyn, insisting that Vera stole the book and vows
to kill both women. It isn't long before Vera is murdered,
but is the mystery thug the murderer, or is someone else involved?
Brooklyn doesn't
tackle this investigation alone though because she's in danger
at every turn thanks to a stalker who is after someone else
working on the show. Her boyfriend, security expert Derek,
and her new neighbor, a woman named Alex who has a background
in covert operations, are by her side to keep her safe and
help unravel the clues.
Because I am a
bibliophile myself, I have a special fondness for this series.
Kate Carlisle does a great job drawing the reader into Brooklyn's
world, and although Brooklyn finds more than her fair share
of bodies, none of the mysteries are over the top. I enjoyed
the dual mysteries in this book, and found my attention grabbed
from the first chapter to the last page.
If you
love a mystery featuring books, friends, romance, and an adorable
kitten, you'll enjoy The Book Stops Here, along with
the previous books in the series. The next book, Ripped
from the Pages, is available in hardcover in June, 2015,
and will also be reviewed on this site.
