Emma Lee Raines runs a mortuary,
Eternal Slumber Funeral Home, that's been handed down from
her grandmother, then her parents, to her and her sister.
Emma also has an unusual knack of seeing the ghosts of dead
people, especially those buried through the family mortuary.
That's why Emma is so surprised when the ghost of Mamie Sue
Preston suddenly appears sitting on her gravestone, asking
for Emma's help to prove she was murdered. It wouldn't hurt
if Emma can find Mamie's false teeth first, though, and place
them in the grave to please Mamie, the town's richest woman.
That's a definite motive for murder, and Emma realizes she
doesn't have much choice. It's up to Emma to ferret out the
clues to who and why of Mamie's murder. Unfortunately, the
more she uncovers, the more suspects are revealed.
Emma's beau, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, knows that Emma is a
"Betweener" - she sees and helps ghosts reach the
other side. Unfortunately, Emma often gets into situations
that are far too dangerous for his liking. Though he tries
his best to keep Emma safe, just like him, once she sniffs
out a clue, she won't let go, especially when she meets another
murdered ghost and realizes the similarity in the two deaths.
Tonya Kappes has drawn an exquisite picture of the small southern
town of Sleepy Hollow, Kentucky, replete with an atmosphere
of greed, envy, revenge, retribution and an especially tasty
plot that twists and turns and entertains until the surprising,
satisfying end. Wonderful characters and hidden secrets slowly
unraveled made this a real winner for me. While this is the
fourth book in the series, it stands alone as a lively, entertaining
read, filled with just the right tough of southern charm,
dark secrets and tingling romance.
