Mayville Heights librarian, Kathleen Paulson is excited about a fund raising event to help the library's Reading Buddies program for children. Her friends and co-workers have put a lot of effort into making the event spectacular, complete with entertainment and luscious cupcakes and small boxes of chocolates for dessert.

The ex-wife of Burtis Chapman, a long time town resident with a bit of a reputation for walking on the shady side of things, blows back into town after an absence of more than 20 years, and shows up at the fund raiser. Meanwhile, the small boxes of chocolates from Decadence Chocolatier are being handed out to guests. Dayna Chapman takes a bite of one of hers and promptly collapses. It seems she had a nut allergy, and this was enough to kill her. Olivia Ramsey, who made the chocolates insists there are no nuts in her products and takes a bite of another chocolate from Dayna's box. She too, collapses, but is saved with an injection from an EpiPen. When it turns out that Dayna's death wasn't a horrible accident, but in fact murder, Burtis asks Kathleen to help. As the ex-husband, he's likely to be the main suspect, and Kathleen has solved murders in the past. Will Kathleen go against her detective boyfriend Marcus' wishes and get involved in his case?

With the help of her magical cats, Hercules and Owen, she might turn up some clues that Marcus doesn't find. Along with help from her friends, Kathleen keeps digging, while at the same time helping her elderly friend Rebecca get ready for her wedding, and trying to figure out how to fund the Reading Buddies program after the disaster at the fund raiser.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, and “A Midwinter's Tail” is no exception. Sofie Kelly keeps her Mojo going strong as the human characters continue to develop and grow, and the feisty felines keep up their magic act. This is a fun and fast read you won't want to put down. Four paws up for “A Midwinter's Tail!”
