Watch
out Cays Mill, Georgia, Nola Mae Harper is back! Nola has
returned to her home town to run the family business while
her parents' are away on a well-deserved cruise. The peach
farm, however, is in financial trouble, and she finds more
on her agenda then she'd imagined. Nola has an idea about
how to increase the profits and get the finances back in the
black, but it may mean she'll have to stick around a lot longer
than she planned to.
Things
go from bad to worse when the local mill owner is murdered
in the peach orchards, and not only is Nola the one to find
the corpse, her drunken brother-in-law becomes the prime suspect!
Would Hollis have killed Ben Wakefield over a soured business
deal? Is it possible he was too drunk to remember? Fortunately,
Nola's brother Ray, an attorney, hires a private investigator
to help sift through clues and try to establish other suspects
to show reasonable doubt. Unfortunately, the private investigator
is a man named Hawk---and Nola and Hawk had a steamy encounter
years before that sent her packing out of town in a hurry.
Will things heat up again?
This
is a delicious debut in what should be a delightful new series.
Cozy mystery lovers will quickly fall in love with Cays Mills
and it's warm and friendly residents, all with their share
of quirks and many with a penchant for gossip.
I love
the Georgia Belle Facts at the start of each chapter, and
my favorite is this one. “Georgia Belle Fact #073: When
life gives you lemons, put them in your sweet tea and take
a nice long sip.” I like this better than the traditional
quote about making lemonade. There are also some yummy peach
recipes included.
Author
Susan Furlong has a clever mind and a skilful way with words.
The story is well-plotted and paced, with just enough of a
Southern tempo to keep the book from ending too soon.
Peaches
and Scream is a really good read, and I highly recommend
it!
