To Catch a Treat by Linda O. Johnston is the second book in the A Barkery & Biscuits Mystery series. Carrie Kennersley, a vet tech, also owns the Bakery and Biscuits bake shop in Knobcone Heights, California. One side of the shop offers human treats, while the other side offers animal treats. The bakery is separated into two stores and is staffed by Carrie and her assistants.

This is the second book in the Barkery & Biscuits series. In this story, Carrie meets Janelle, her brother Neal's new friend and potential love interest. Janelle has come to Knobcone Heights to heal after her dog Goliath, Go for short, was dognapped. Carrie, an advocate for all furry four-legged animals, especially dogs, steps in to see what she can do to help. When Ada, a local resident is murdered, Janelle is considered a suspect. Carrie finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation as well as a possible dog theft ring to help clear Janelle's name, while keeping her brother out of the sights of the police.

At the beginning of this story I felt the writing dragged a bit, but by the time I hit mid-book, the story took off and became a much faster read with lots of excitement. The story is well written, however I have a hard time saying that it is a true cozy mystery, as Carrie's interest is centered around finding out who is kidnapping the dogs and the murder feels secondary. I do like that Carrie was smart about her sleuthing and did it, for the most part, in a safe way. If you are a dog lover then I'm sure your heart will melt with the characters of Biscuit, Hugo and Sweetie.

This book is well told and the end will be sure to surprise you with the twists and turns that even I, an avid cozy mystery reader, didn't see coming! Also, be sure to check out the back of the book for both human and furry friend friendly recipes!
