Quincy Stanton, an illegitimate son of the Earl of Dearlington who was raised in America by his uncle, agrees to be a spy to gain information that the British are in Boston to suppress the Colonists and to prevent his impoverished father from taking over their flourishing shipping business. He poses as a fop. He meets young Colonist Virginia Munro from North Carolina. Virginia suspects that Quincy isn't what he appears to be.

When Quincy's brother, Clarence, arrives from England to try to take over the shipping business, he causes Quincy to be arrested as a thief and a spy. With the help of the Sons of Liberty and Virginia's family, Quincy manages to escape deportation and to resolve the situation.

This is a delightful romp in pre-Revolutionary Boston with two engaging characters. There are a few James Bond-type gadgets and the experiments with a crude submersible which add to the excitement. The scene is set for the beginnings of the revolt of the Colonists against the tyranny of the British. The dialogue is witty and the characters are well drawn. The action is speedy. The story moves along at a rapid pace. A thoroughly enjoyable fast read.
