Rules
of Engagement
By Kathryn Caskie
Eliza Merriweather is not
looking forward to her Season. All she can think about is taking
a ship to Italy and studying painting, and getting married will
only get in the way of achieving her dreams. But her two spinster
aunts are determined to marry both her and her sister Grace off,
and have even consulted a book called “Rules of Engagement”
to do it. Trouble is, this is a textbook on military strategy. And,
meeting Magnus MacKinnon has almost made her plans fly out of the
window…
I do like a romance with humor in it, and there
are plenty of smiles between these two covers. Magnus is a genuinely
warm and likeable hero, caring more for his tenants than about the
cut of his coat, and Eliza is the typical dizzy-but-charming heroine.
There is no sub-plot here, and the pages don’t smolder with
lots of sex, but there is plenty to amuse, and the novel isn’t
so long as to need too much else apart from the schemes of the sisters
and their aunts to get married (or to avoid it at all costs). This
is a debut novel for this writer and I will look out for more of
her work if it continues to be sprightly with the right light touch.
