Tempted
By Pamela Britton
Through
the centuries, the Dukes of Wainridge have had a reputation for
being licentious, disreputable scoundrels. The present duke (the
8th) Alexander Drumming, the Marquis of Warrick, is more interested
in pursuing lawbreakers as a Revenue Commander. One of his latest
exploits is arresting the smugglers from the small town, Hollowbrook,
which ended the livelihood of the townspeople.
Alexander
is in need of a nursemaid for his eight-year-old daughter Gabriella
(Gabby), an uncontrollable brat. When Mary Callaghan applies for
the job, he has doubts about hiring her as she really seems disinterested,
with no references or experience. During the interview, she meets
Gabby and seems to be able to curb her manners. He is unaware that
Mary is really the daughter of smuggler, Tobias Brown, who envisions
his daughter as a spy in household, tracking his lordship's moves.
The
two become fatally attracted to each other and fight against it.
Mary is not only the daughter of his enemy, but also the Royal Circus'
famed female stunt rider, Artemis. There ensues a battle against
desire when Alex discovers the truth while Mary must discover the
truth about her mother.
This
is a delightful story with two colorful protagonists. The atmosphere
of the period is well-portrayed with even a cameo appearance by
the Prince Regent. There is plenty of action: kidnappings, escapes
and glimpses of society of the times. There are many references
to sex and seduction; the scenes spectacular, explicit, yet sensitive.
