At Her Service

By Shari Anton

Lady Joanna is between a rock and a hard place. Her widow status makes it hard for her to have her orders followed, and her people want her to take a husband. Her first and only trial-by-fire in matrimony ended in disaster; her husband abused her. She will never allow that to happen again, but when thieves plague her holdings and her daughter is injured, she seeks a mercenary to get rid of her problem.

A woman of title has already shafted Logan Grimm; he will not work for a woman. The last one caused him grievous injury. When Joanna of Lynwood Manor seeks his services, he initially turns her down. Finally, against his better judgment, he decides to travel to her home, where he finds a woman of intellect, a loving mother, and a seductress who sets his heart and loins on fire. He agrees to stay and help, but finds hunting the thieves is much less dangerous than trying to keep away from the lady of the manor.

Joanna finds the mercenary a gentle and caring soul, despite his size and reputation, but when she learns more about his past, she is horrified. Logan knows that Joanna is appalled at how he makes a living, but he hopes his manner will prove that he is worthy of being in her service.

Ms. Anton once again displays her talent for penning an excellent and moving medieval. The humor that abounds in her pages and the emotion that moves the story along is well done.
