The
Chemistry of Evil
By
Lynne Connolly
Sofie
is working on a dig at Arthurian site Tintagel in Cornwall in close
company with her fiancé Archie. But she has fallen out of
love with him, and is desperate to avoid her impending marriage.
When Archie gets drunk and beds her friend this looks like her ticket
out, but the man she is working with isn't Archie at all, but a
shell of a man possessed by the ancient spirit of the evil Mordred.
Back in New York and working in her usual field of forensic archaeology
she has been investigating a series of murders - but how can "Mordred"
be responsible when he hadn't even come into being when the first
was committed?
Sex, magic, supernatural powers and
magic pipes that call forth lost souls are some of the ingredients
of this suspenseful tale. There are many things to enjoy here, reminding
me of how much I tend to enjoy split genre books. Romance, some
steamy sex, fantasy and detective make great partners in this admirably
paced novel. It is a rare thing for me to complain that a book is
too short (almost unknown in fact) but there seemed to be so much
packed in here that demanded more space. Evan's mother's relationship
with the mysterious Cristos, the work of his department and more
of Evan's own powers and how they are applied to detective work
all demand to be told about in future books. Let's hope that this
is the first in a new series.
