Heavens to Betsy
by Beth Pattillo
Heavens to Betsy begins with
Reverend Betsy Blessing officiating a wedding. She swears that it
will be her last wedding because she is planning on resigning, at
the same time, she wonders if she will "...ever be on the receiving
end of the wedding vows?" The reason why Betsy plans to resign from
her position as associate pastor of the Church of the Shepard is a
lack of confidence and a fear that she cannot live up to the expectations
of the congregation. Betsy also worries that her two best friends,
Reverends David Swenson and Laronda Mason will not understand her
reasons for resigning.
Betsy and David go to the movies
as friends, something they have been doing since their days at divinity
school; but this outing is very different. When David leans over
to grab some popcorn, he accidentally touches Betsy's thigh and
she suddenly realizes that she has feelings for him that go beyond
friendship. While dealing with her emotions, Betsy finds herself:
assuming the senior pastor position rather than resigning, getting
a very public makeover, and trying to figure out who is stealing
from the collection box.
Heavens to Betsy is a delightfully
entertaining contemporary romance. The author draws from her own
experiences as an ordained minister to fully develop Betsy Blessing
as a believable character struggling in a traditionally male-dominated
profession. This is a truly "feel good" novel that I most highly
recommend as an uplifting read. |
