Bordello
by Jewelann Butler
Savannah Lullaby Knight, a widow, inherited the La Hibicus Rogue Bordello from her husband Charles. The bordello,
which also serves as a shelter for battered wives, provides security and anonymity to the women in their attempt
to escape their husbands’ wrath. When Savannah’s best friend, Lynette De Dentelle, runs to the bordello with her
small son, Savannah learns that the Lynette’s husband, Francois, was responsible for the death of their child.
Savannah quickly agrees to harbor her friend until Lynette can escape to relatives in England.
Savannah’s mother, Georgia Louise, wants grandchildren and makes plans for Savannah to meet her friend Clarice’s
wealthy son, Napoleon. Savannah, however, is far too independent and headstrong to think about marriage. That is
until she meets a stranger with an eye patch, only to discover he is Napoleon (the nephew Clarice calls her son).
Napoleon Falconer has no intentions of marrying. A wealthy antiquities dealer, he spends his spare time
searching for missing wives. He’s not interested in the money he earns, but rather he hopes that his efforts will
one day result in finding the mother who deserted him. Then he meets Savannah, a beautiful widow who, oddly enough,
reminds him of the madam of the bordello.
Although their mutual attraction is immediate, Savannah learns that Francois De Dentelle has hired Napoleon to
find his wife, Lynette. Savannah realizes that Napoleon is a dangerous man, a threat to her heart but, far more
importantly, one who places her friend’s safety in jeopardy. Though Savannah’s first thought is never to see
Napoleon again, she realizes she must, if she is to learn of his progress in trying to find Lynette.
Bordello is a wonderful romance filled with secrets, betrayals and a thrilling, page-turning plot.
Jewelann Butler has a knack for description and dialogue that lends credibility to the era, and her characters
are marvelously developed. The question of how Savannah and Napoleon can overcome their differences after he
learns she is the Madame of the bordello kept me reading well into the night. I loved this book! Bordello
is a real jewel and guaranteed keeper. |
