Dark Roots and Cowboy Boots

by LuAnn McLane

Jamie Lee Carter, owner of the Cut and Curl beauty shop, is perfectly happy with her life... pretty much so anyway. OK, a little more excitement and a lover would be nice but, overall, life is good.

Macy McCoy has been Jamie Lee’s best friend since they were kids. She’s been in love with Jamie Lee’s big brother, Luke, for almost as long. Macy is short and curvy, the opposite of Luke’s usual Barbie doll girlfriends. She’s just his baby sister’s goofy friend. That is about to change. Macy and Jamie Lee vow to make this a summer to remember. About that time Parker Carrington blows into town in a shiny, silver Jaguar.

Parker is a movie producer from Hollywood who’s scouting locations for his latest flick. He’s looking for smalltown, USA and in Hootertown, Kentucky he thinks he’s found it. When he asks Jamie Lee to show him around she jumps at the chance. This is just what she needs to help her stop mooning over her brother’s best friend, Griffin Sheldon. She has loved him forever, but to him she’ll always be Luke’s pesky kid sister.

A day of sightseeing with Parker soon leads to a night in bed, well a makeout session on the sofa anyway. Jamie Lee finds herself topless on top of Parker. Lack of protection brings Jamie Lee to her senses and she sends Parker packin’.

No sooner does Parker leave than Griff shows up, drunk and frisky. Soon he and Jamie Lee wind up in bed. After he passes out, Jamie Lee begins to cry. She’s been down this road before. The last time she gave her heart to Griff he stomped it into pieces. Why doesn’t Griff notice her when he’s sober? Why can’t she fall for the sexy out-of-towner who finds her fascinating? If getting down and dirty with a sexy man like Parker can’t get her mind off of Griff, can anything?

This is an enjoyable story. It has several secondary characters whose romances will make good follow up books. It’s a fun read.
