Duchess of Fifth Avenue
by Ruth Ryan Langan
Lana Dunleavy and her best friend, Siobhan Riley, escape from the Kerry Ireland Home for
Foundlings. Lana works to earn money for their passage to America; Siobhan falls in love
with a worthless charmer, Billy O'Malley. Finally they board a ship to New York. On board
Siobhan gives birth to Billy's son, Colin. In New York, Lana finds work at the Blue Goose
Tavern where she hopes to save enough money to make a better life for them. She takes
a job as a maid with a wealthy family which will give her higher wages. Siobhan is killed
under the wheels of a carriage which is driven by Billy who wants to kill her. Billy is
killed when that carriage crashes. This leaves Colin an orphan, destined for an orphanage.
Lana tries to adopt Colin but is unable to do so because she is unmarried and without money.
When a wealthy couple adopts Colin purely for publicity reasons, Lana is determined to
rescue him. She persuades Jesse Jordan, a charming man she met at the Blue Goose Tavern
to teach her to become a fine lady. She believes him to be a confidence man. He undertakes
the request and eventually introduces her into society as a member of the British royal
family. Lana fights for Colin and fights her love for Jesse, not realizing that he, too,
is not who he pretends to be.
This sweet story of a Gay 90's New York romance takes a deep look at an era when immigrants
struggle to obtain work and a place in society while high society enjoys the good life with parties.
It brings to life the atmosphere and life of the people of those times with colorful descriptions.
The loyalty of Lana to Siobhan and her love for Colin is heartwarming. It is a pleasure to
observe the relationship that develops between Jesse and Lana.
An enjoyable romance to fill a few hours..... |
