The Holding Pen
A Collection of Unusual Love Prose
by Barbara Kennedy
The Holding Pen, a short story collection by Barbara Kennedy, was somewhat of a
weird journey for me. Eight short stories make up this collection: "Laina and the Vamp",
"The Hawk and the Fox", "Chelsea Matinee - an excerpt", "Renegade Spirit", "Just Desserts",
"Spilling Forth", "It's Warm for October", and title story "The Holding Pen". Each story
is different from the next; I really liked that because it didn't make for a broken record,
and I was curious to see how the next story unfolded.
Out of all the stories the two that stick out most were "The Hawk and the Fox" and "The
Holding Pen". "The Hawk and the Fox" is a perfectly written short story about two animals
in the wild and their unusual relationship. In a way, it reminded me of a Disney movie,
a feel good read. "The Holding Pen" is about two people who meet, and you kind of want
their rocky relationship to work out, and the ending is more real-life than most in the
romance genre. The characters of this one, although I don't remember ever finding out
the narrator's name, are outstanding and so real-life. A lot of bad characteristics in
the man, August (a.k.a. Skip), are not usually what you find in a romantic story.
Barbara Kennedy's collection of short stories is a good read and would make any afternoon
go by. It was a nice and unusual (as the subtitle implies) collection - a must
read for any eclectic reader. |
