A Limited Partnership
by Elisabeth Stewart
Alone by choice, knowing that she can depend on no one but herself, Kate Sullivan is not
too thrilled at the prospect of being under 24/7 police protection. She hadn't planned on
interrupting the theft of her own car, and how was she to know that those involved were
hit men? While the police are delighted that her reporter memory could call forth details
that will help them, she's hot under the collar thinking that the men might now be after
her. The danger to her is one thing, the danger to her unborn child, another. Being a
take-charge kind of person, Kate is frightened, but determined to act as bait, luring the
hit men out of hiding.
Detective Michael O'Connor is good at what he does. Right now, he wants Kate's suspects
brought to justice, as they're part of a bigger case. He's delighted that Kate is cooperative,
at least until he learns that she's pregnant and that he's beginning to care more than
he should. Naturally, he fights any attraction. What else could a recently divorced single
male not looking to repeat his mistakes do? Especially when he's protecting the witness.
But when Kate makes him aware that she would be delighted to become more closely acquainted,
he agrees, even if it is on her terms of no future, just the present. When Michael is
given a false lead and Kate is threatened, he realizes that there is no future as he envisions
it, without Kate.
While the first half of the book has a lot of dialogue that tends to put you in mind
of squabbling children, Ms. Stewart makes up for it in the second half of the book. The
ending to A Limited Partnership leads to a quite satisfactory "ahhhhhh..." moment. |
