Marriage
Most Scandalous
by Johanna Lindsey
If anybody asked Douglas Townshend, the eighth earl of Edgewood, how many sons he had he would
say only one - actually he has two, but the heir is dead to him. Back in 1808, Sebastian
accidentally killed his best friend, Giles, in a duel over his wife, and since then he has
been living abroad. Roaming from country to country with his faithful manservant in tow
and having as his pied-a-terre a ruined castle in France. For he is The Raven, a mercenary
who undertakes all sorts of jobs, although he doesn't wish to do so for his former neighbor's
ward, Lady Margaret Landor. She has come all this way to hire The Raven in order to find...
Sebastian Townshend! His father is in danger, but he might set his own price higher than
usual if he agrees to pose as Margaret's husband.
Johanna Lindsey has been one of the world's best beloved romance authors since 1977.
Now UK readers get a chance to read one of her sizzlingly romantic tales, and as this
was the first of her books that I have read, I finally got a chance to see what the fuss
was all about. It is a highly engaging romp of a book, with duels, wanton women, a hint
of mystery, some sex and even later on some refreshing humor. In my opinion, this type
of romance works best when it doesn't take itself too seriously (think Georgette Heyer),
and this has more than a touch of comedy. Sebastian can be excused for coming on as the
alpha male at times, and Margaret is a mainly level-headed woman who knows what she wants.
There is even some derring-do in a dungeon for good measure. I aim to read more of her books,
and if you want to read a really well done Regency romance then look no further. |
