Ready or Not?
by Chris Manby
Ready or Not? is not always romantic. But, the definitely chick-lit book follows Heidi through her time
dealing with wedding plans, pre-wedding disasters, and a sometimes foolish fiancé, Ed. Their wedding is four
months away. Heidi’s pre-wedding jitters are only magnified when her hunky ex-boyfriend, Steven, comes back into
the picture as a surprise guest on her radio talk show. He’s now a single dad, a lot has changed, except the
attraction she felt for him seven years prior. Along with that, she is asked to baby-sit her single friend,
Kara’s child, only to be totally absent when anything baby related happens... no dirty diapers, no feedings, no
getting up when the baby cries... it is all put on Ed’s shoulders. She finally gets her time by herself, figures
it’s not as bad as she thought it would be, but mind you it was still a tough day out, where she ends up at
Steven’s place, after suspecting that Ed is having an affair.
Chris Manby’s Ready or Not? has no real climax, it reads more like a memoir. The book leaves all
questions answered by the end, but at times, I felt like there was no point to this story. I do wonder why the
bit of information that closes out the book is left to the very end, when I feel most readers would be more
sympathetic to why Heidi has such an adverse reaction to all things baby and children. Pro-lifers might find
offense in this book, just a warning. Ready or Not? is different from anything I’ve read in a long time,
but it is good nonetheless. |
