Second-Time Lucky
Silhouette Special Edition - 1770

by Laurie Paige

Tragedy was no stranger to the Aquilon clan. Mere months apart the family had suffered life altering losses. It began when Washington Aquilon lost control of his truck on an icy road and was killed instantly upon impact. His death left behind his two children, 13 year old Tony, and 10 year old Kristen. Not long after his death, his brother Jefferson lost his left foot to a land mind in Afghanistan. Then the oldest sibling, Lincoln suffered a massive heart attack. His death left behind his son Jeremy.

Jefferson "Jeff" knew that it was up to him to care for his brothers' children for he was their only living relative. He put aside feelings of his own loss and invited all of them to live in his small two bedroom trailer. Family Services was against the tight living quarters and removed Tony and Kristen from his home, citing that there was not adequate room there for the children. They placed them in a foster home that turned out to be with people who abused them. The children ran away from their foster parents and back to their Uncle Jeff. Jeff was able to convince Family Services to allow him to keep the children with the agreement he was going to move to a larger, more appropriate home in Council, Idaho. There he would make his living from his disability pension and selling his sculptures. He knew he would have to do whatever it would take to keep his small family together.

Social Worker Caileen Hall was assigned the Aquilon case. It was her responsibility to ensure the children were receiving the proper care they needed. In reading their file, she envisioned that Jeff would make her job difficult since he had a distrust of social services. Her first meeting with the family was a positive one. She was very impressed with the love and care that went into decorating their new home. Through her visits she discovered she was quickly drawn into the love the family radiated. Slowly, Jeff let down his guard for her position and allowed his true caring nature to shine through. Quickly the two became very good friends. Then the unexpected occurred when their professional relationship deepened into something personal. Jeff has her feeling long forgotten feelings she thought were dead and buried. She questions if his motives are sincere or just a ploy to help keep his family together.

Laurie Paige has a true talent that allows her to grab hold of reader’s emotions and pull them into her beloved characters lives. This book is a perfect example of how her true artist talent will pull at your heartstrings. She has quickly become one of my all time favorite authors, for her works are so expertly developed you are assured of being rewarded with the perfect reading experience. Very highly recommended.
