Shadowheart

by Laura Kinsale

Vengeance is mine, and I will repay - Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy

Vengeance has always been a constant companion to Allegreto Navona. Having been born a bastard, his life had been filled with death and destruction, for his father had trained him to kill without any feelings of remorse. Ice runs cold throughout his veins as with each conquest he seeks to regain his rightful birthright.

Seventeen year old Elena’s fate is sealed when she agrees to a prearranged marriage to Franco Pietro Riata. She travels to Italy to find her beloved, the union will be one that will help solidify her as a Monteverde Princess. Her plans for the future are interrupted when her ship is attacked by blood-thirsty pirates. She manages to survive the attack, but finds herself being held prisoner on the Mediterranean island of Il Corvo. There she encounters assassin, Allegreto Navona. Darkness and evil fill his soul, but deep in his eyes, she sees a glimmer of a man who struggles to be set free. With great will and determination, she sets out to melt the ice that surrounds his heart.

Laura Kinsale is an author who is the Queen of tortured heroes. There is no other writer in existence who can breathe such pain and anguish into characters you have no choice but to grow and love. With their salvation, you can literally feel your heart explode with the joy of knowing that good will win out in the end. Fans may remember that we were first introduced to Allegreto, eleven years ago, in another memorable novel. His dark spirit refused to be buried in that one lone book. His character is a true testament to the talent of Laura Kinsale, who is able to write about someone, about whose life we saw just a glimpse in another book, and turn him into a character who literally takes our breath away. Very highly recommended
