Timeless Deception
by Susan Knight
A 21st century woman working on her doctorate about ancient Greece does not expect to pass
out and wake up 200 years earlier! Not only does Alaina find herself in a different time
period, but also in a different - yet eerily similar - body. When she awakens in a well-appointed,
if gaudy room, she learns that she's a high born lady, has a lofty title as countess and
is pampered. That's the good part. Then she sees her 'husband.' Just looking at him makes
her think that's the very good part. But when she realizes that trapped as a 19th century
woman, she is under the rule of her husband who just happens to have plenty of reason to
be angry with her, it's not so good. In fact, it's looking pretty grim. Learning the
reason for her exile to her husband's outer properties is not enough. She wants to change
the situation, yet doesn't know if she should. After all, as soon as she finds the old
woman who performed the transference spell, she plans on going right back to her 21st
century life.
To say that Richard, Seventh Earl of Saybrooke, was disgruntled to have to come back
and check on his wife during her illness was putting it mildly. Still, he could hardly let
the woman die. To his lasting regret, she is the mother of his son. By the time he arrives
at his estate, his wife Alicia - Alaina - is awake. While unconscious she seems to have
undergone a change in her manners. Too bad he can't quite believe what is in front of him.
It takes him some time to realize that the differences he's noticed in his wife were
not his imagination, and he likes this new version much better.
I read Timeless Deception straight through. Ms. Knight's light touch and sense
of humor pull you along. Her secondary characters are well developed and add dimension to
the story. While her period voice and understanding of the mores of the century need some
work, the story is still enjoyable. |
