Under the Mistletoe
by Mary Balogh
If you want to read Regency Christmas tales, this is the book. Under the Mistletoe contains five short
stories dealing with love, marriage, friendship and healing. Four of the stories have appeared in different
collections, "The Star of Bethlehem", "The Best Gift", "Playing House", and "No Room At the Inn". "A Family
Christmas" is new to this anthology and features Edwin, a ‘Cit’ who marries Elizabeth, one of the needy aristocracy.
While "No Room at the Inn" is an older story reprinted, it is probably my least favorite, yet it too has its feel-good
moments. Each of the stories by itself is delightful. Unfortunately, packaged all together, their sameness is
evident. The characters are distinct individuals, but the settings all tend to blend together. There is holly,
ivy, mistletoe, snow, snowball fights, and holly, ivy, snow... All of the holiday symbols are crammed into each of
the stories.
Each of the stories is typical Balogh - well written by an author who believes in strong heroines and who knows
her time period exceptionally well. Under the Mistletoe is delightful holiday reading, though I would
recommend not doing it all at one time! |
