The Vixen Princess
Follow-up to The Fox Prince
by Cornelia Amiri
Nesta, born a princess, is a beautiful widow who has several suitors, among them Lord Caddor
of North Britannia, a man Nesta despises. She makes no secret of the fact that she's still
in love with her dead husband, Gwydion, and has no desire to remarry. She would rather
serve her new king, sword in hand. Fighting the Saxons would help her escape her memories,
if only for a while. Her visiting niece, Enid, however, is determined to find a new husband
for her lovely, if older, aunt. When she learns of Nesta's plans, Enid's own plans intensify,
and she even asks Caddor for help to prevent Nesta from going into battle.
Then the young King Arthur arrives with his champion, Mabon, on their way to Silchester.
Nesta has heard of Mabon, a soldier who has always put duty first, but she never expected
him to be so ruggedly handsome. Mabon is equally enchanted with Nesta -a beautiful, brave
woman with ample curves that fire his desire. When Enid informs Mabon that Nesta intends
to fight the Saxons, he swears he will never let any Saxons -let alone suitors- get near her.
Enid and Nesta are invited to accompany the king and his champion to Silchester, and during
the trip, a growing friendship develops between Nesta and Mabon. Young Arthur, fully aware
of the magnetism between the two, hints that Mabon should court Nesta. Enid, unaware of the
growing attraction, asks the Archbishop Dubricius for help to keep her aunt from going
off to war.
That help appears in the form of Nesta's ghostly husband, Gwydion. Only Mabon can see
the ghost, who can't return to Heaven until Mabon woos and marries Nesta. When Caddor drugs,
then kidnaps Nesta, Mabon saves her and they share their first kiss, but Mabon's awkward
reaction makes her certain that the brave soldier she is falling in love with will never
marry. As a result, her husband's ghost tries even harder to get Mabon to reveal his true
feelings to Nesta before they battle the Saxons.
The Vixen Princess is a delightful tale, one that had me hooked from the first page.
Ms. Amiri has sprinkled enough humor and suspense in this novel to keep me turning the
pages and often laughing out loud. Ms. Amiri has done a fantastic job of portraying the
battles between the Celts and Saxons, but it's the battle of hearts between the two
warriors, Mabon and Nesta, that is sure to win you over. |
