Bedding the Heiress

by Cathy Maxwell

Francesca Dunroy cared for her mother until her death, delaying her introduction to English society. Now an heiress, Francesca and her family are shunned because her father remarried a month after her mother’s death. Francesca, alone and unhappy, is easily charmed by Lord Penthorpe’s attentions - until he steals her mother’s pearl necklace, intent on blackmailing her. Francesca arranges a secret tryst with Penthorpe on the terrace during a party held to honor the newly appointed Duke of Colster, hoping to charm Penthorpe into returning the necklace. But the man she meets isn’t Penthorpe, not with that sexy Scottish brogue.

Justin Maddox was kidnapped immediately after his birth and taken to Scotland. When his younger brother, Phillip Maddox, learns of his twin, Phillip insists on doing what’s right: returning the title of Duke to Justin. Upon his arrival in England, Justin hides the "Sword of the Mackenna," fully aware that whoever possesses the sword can lead the Scots in rebellion against the English. Uncomfortable with his new title, let alone trying to be an Englishman, when Phillip insists Justin attend a party, the new Duke quickly escapes to the terrace.

From the moment of their first kiss, Justin and Francesca find themselves entangled in situations difficult to overcome. Francesca is determined to obtain her mother’s necklace, but has mixed feelings when her father insists she return it so he can present the necklace to his new wife. Justin must cope with his newfound relationship with his brother, Phillip. This struggle was aptly symbolized through the "Sword of the Mackenna," and the arrival of a woman from Justin’s past.

I loved the interaction between Justin and Francesca, how two lonely, insecure and strong-willed people learn to develop trust and love. Justin is definitely charming, with all the emotions and actions of a true hero, while the impetuous Francesca is a wonderful heroine who learns how to forgive, trust and love.

Bedding the Heiress is a delightfully clever, touching and engrossing story. Once again, Cathy Maxwell has written a guaranteed keeper. I loved Bedding the Heiress and eagerly await her next release in the series.
