Bride for a Knight
by Sue-Ellen Welfonder
This medieval Scottish romance features an over-sized knight, his petite bride, two cantankerous fathers,
strange siblings, magical beings, and lots of ghosts. A complicated plot, involving the drowning deaths of
Jamie Macpherson’s nine brothers, often overshadows his upcoming wedding to the lovely Aveline Matheson, whom
he first mistakes for a fairy creature in the moonlight. This preoccupation with Jamie’s grief, revenge, guilt,
and self-preservation keeps the new couple from fully exploring their romantic feelings until the second half
of the book.
The story is richly drawn with evocative descriptions of the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the time
and place. When Jamie finally finds time to spend with his bride, their lovemaking also includes this heightened
sensuality. While the romance takes a while to heat up, when it eventually ignites, the pages practically sizzle
with its intensity.
Although what we learn about Aveline makes her a strong, likeable character, her background details are skimpy
compared to the wealth of information provided about Jamie’s troubled past (including that his mother died giving
birth to him, his father threw him out of the house, he fought bravely for his country, often visited a widowed
"joy woman," and his large body parts are legendary). Welfonder carefully crafts the story to answer all
questions and tie up loose ends, but she throws in two last-minute surprises that few readers will anticipate.
Bride for a Knight is like an enjoyable medieval romp through moonlit enchanted woods. |
