A Gift For A Rake
by Ann Barker
Diplomat’s daughter Eleanor Carruthers is used to traveling around, and to having to take charge in all kinds of
situations, unlike most Regency misses. While her father honeymoons with his new wife, she is sent to stay with
relatives in rural Warwickshire for Christmas. Heavy snow causes her carriage to break a wheel, and her driver
is hurt - but surely Eleanor and her maid can find shelter at this large house? This is the home of a hellraiser,
Charles Christian Hurst who, six months ago, caused the accident that left his wife and unborn heir dead and
himself crippled. Surely he can be no danger to her - unable to walk - and this is a house in need of some care
and attention, just like its owner...
I enjoy reading all types of Regencies, and it makes a pleasant change to find one that is a little different.
Eleanor is no "Bath Miss" and is a delightfully rational and capable heroine, and disabled Chris makes a change as
well. Instead of dizzy descriptions of town life, or the gentler pace of life in a great country house here is a
neglected, sad abode that needs some TLC to put it right, a pleasant idea for a Christmas novel. There aren’t
many characters, but that means we get to know them better and care more about the outcome of the story. Readers
may not learn much about the period reading this (unlikely in an isolated old house with just a few people) but
that isn’t the only reason for reading a Regency! Just the sort of book to curl up with on a cold winter’s night
with a mince pie in each hand. |
