Light in Shadow

by Jayne Anne Krantz
read by Joyce Bean

Zoe Luce is an interior designer like no other; her designs bring light and refreshing air into a house, she works hard to give the client what they want, and she pulls the old blood out of the walls. Her senses are particularly tuned to the lingering vibrations in a room, and she can tell when it has been used during an act of great passion, be it loving or cruel. She either enhances or dampens emotional imprints with her designs. Without advertising, she is busy and her customer satisfaction rate is as high as her prices, with the happiest clients being the newly divorced. Through word-of-mouth, she finds herself at the doorway of a room where she has no doubt that there has been a vicious murder, and that the murderer is asking her for a date.

Enter Private Investigator Ethan Truax: tall, broad-shouldered and heroic, Superman in a tool belt. Mr. "You want me to investigate a murder for a woman that isn’t even reported missing?" The stuff that paranormal romance novels are made of is about to ensue. She wins him over to her side, he checks it out, does a little more poking around, finds the evidence, the bad guy goes to jail, and they fall in love. In between there is some drama about trying to kill Zoe to keep her mouth shut, but Ethan takes care of that too.

Oops, you think I gave too much away? Well, that was just the teaser. I didn’t tell you Zoe’s real name but she didn’t tell Ethan either. I didn’t introduce you to Zoe’s elegant friend Arcadia or mention the secret they share about Xanadu. The two women are running, but why and from whom? Bullets, rape, murder, experimental drug treatments and husbands, just how far can a PI go to save his best client and protect those around him?

Narrator Joyce Bean leads you through the answers and the emotions. Her characterizations expand your listening experience, painting audible portraits to go with the words on the tape. I normally only listen to unabridged audiobooks, but I got a good story and a good telling from this 6-hour version.
