Not the Marrying Kind

by Hailey North

Not the Marrying Kind, by Hailey North. This book is a true delight to read. It will appeal to a large group of the population, looking for something a bit untraditional and edgy, yet fits in with the lifestyle and challenges of today’s world.

How many of us are in this very situation? Growing up, you were a bit different from the rest of your graduation class, a bit of a loner, but you knew and liked who you were. You moved away from the small town to discover a bigger and grander way of life. You came back home only occasionally and yet, you still never really fit into the ways of those you left behind. Along the way, you grew into a very productive and adventurous person who was very happy and content with your life; or are you?

Harriet P. Smith, a different kind of gal, knew from the beginning rural Arkansas was a place she would never call home again. When she discovered her pregnancy after sleeping with Jake Porter just once on prom night, she was forced to make a radical change in her life. She decided marrying her best friend, Donnie Smith, would create the life she needed to move on. So they married and moved to New York City, a place for her to grow and develop into the woman she was meant to be. Harriet began her art career and Donnie his musical career. Between the two of them, they hit it big and life was great, until Donnie went on a trip with his Dad and both died in a car accident. Now Harriet is alone again and with a son.

Jake Porter also made it big in the music business. He became the producer of his own highly successful record label, developing acts which turned into some of the biggest hits on the record charts. There is one thing missing: commitment. Not one of the string of ladies Jake left behind could fulfill his need and produce the commitment he didn’t know he searched for, until he saw a mystery lady in the Little Rock airport dressed in a cashmere red coat and black boots. Who was she and would he ever meet up with her again?

I won’t tell you the rest of the story. It wouldn’t be fair to you or the author of the book. But what I will tell you is that this book is a joy and pleasure to read. You will not be disappointed!
