Shoe Addicts Anonymous

by Beth Harbison

Lorna Rafferty, young waitress, is in danger of losing her car and her home. She has maxed her credit cards and is behind in her car payments and her mortgage. She is obsessed with buying designer shoes on the Internet. In the hope of finding a solution for her problems, she posts an ad in the Internet for a club, Shoe Addicts Anonymous, for women size 7 1/2 medium, who would meet Tuesday nights to swap shoes.

She attracts two women. The first is Helen Zaharis, a Senator's trophy wife, whose husband has cancelled her credit cards. She wants to escape from her loveless marriage. The second, Sandra Vanderslice, is an overweight phone sex operator who is struggling to overcome her agoraphobia.

They find a third member in Jose Bowen who isn't really interested in designer shoes, but is a nanny for a shrewish socialite with two hellish boys. She uses the group as an excuse to get out of the house.

The meetings develop beyond their original purpose, and create deep friendships which allow them to see themselves in a new light and find a solution to their problems. This is an entertaining novel not just about a shared passion for shoes, but about friendship. It has warmth and humor. The characters are convincing with a sensitive understanding of women. The reader is given a glimpse into the world of designer shoes and their fantastic cost. ( I find it fantastic and unbelievable that anyone would pay $500 or more for a pair of shoes!!!).

This is a light, fast read, ideal for an evening's pleasurable reading.
