The Marriage Ring
Scandals and Seduction series

by Cathy Maxwell

Grace MacEachin is determined to blackmail the Lynsted twins, Lord Maven and Lord Brandt. Years earlier, they accused her vicar father of stealing funds from Dame Mary Ewing’s estate. As a result, her father was sentenced to a penal colony for ten years. Without his protection, Grace’s world shattered, culminating in rape.  Now, Grace has escaped to London to seek revenge for her father.

Richard Lynsted is invited by his cousin and his cousin’s wife to the theatre. When an emergency arises, they ask Richard to deliver a note to Grace apologizing for their sudden departure. Richard realizes that Grace is a beautiful, bold and talented singer who expertly handles the rowdy men before she leaves the stage.

Grace soon recognizes the theatre life is not for her and plans to leave, but her manager won’t have it. When he attempts to rape her, she pulls out a knife to protect herself, but Richard arrives and ultimately saves Grace from attack. Grace recognizes the hidden agenda behind Richard’s aloof attitude—one she discovers when he introduces himself as the Honorable Richard Lynsted, Lord Brandt’s son and heir.

The battle lines are drawn immediately. Richard believes Grace is a ruthless and manipulative Scot, and Grace is sure that Richard will try to still her accusations. But when Grace asks Richard to go to Scotland to hear her father’s story, Richard realizes that Grace’s request isn’t about money, but her estrangement from her father, and agrees to the trip.

For Grace, the journey is a return to the pain of her past and a healing process; for Richard, an awakening of the power of love.

Cathy Maxwell’s The Marriage Ring is fantastic with a thoroughly enjoyable plot. The characters are fresh and alive with more personal depth than is found in most historical romances. I loved Grace’s bold determination, her ability to defend herself verbally and physically despite social propriety. Richard is a compassionate man who, like Grace, has a need for love and understanding, one to make any woman’s heart melt. Like all the novels in this series, The Marriage Ring is a definite keeper to be savored over and over again.
