At the end of the last book the characters of Brid the Maiden Priestess, young lordling Caspar and the worldly, charming Hal have been cast to the four corners of Welch’s fantasy world.  They all have some growing up to do and with adventures like these it is certain that this at least will be accomplished.   So much happens in these packed pages that they hardly have time to pause for breath – fearsome monsters loosed from a magic egg, torture chambers in an otherwordly location, strange beings living in the woods, treks across deserts both sandy and icy and much more.  I had thought when reading her earlier books that they were standard fantasy fare – nice view but I’ve seen this scenery before – but by the sheer vigor of the narrative in this book I have definitely changed my mind.  Most fantasy writers produce a long book but this one actually contains a long story as well!  I look forward to her next novel and I think that like the characters in this tale she – or rather her writing skill – has come of age.
