Remember the Genesis planet in the film and the amazing terraforming transformation? What if this useful tool was turned against habited planets; it could destroy all life upon them in an instant and then wash away into space to spread more havoc. This is what happened in the first book in John Vornholt's thrilling duet of novels featuring the Next Generation crew - now read on! After the devastation of several planets and the abduction of Dr Carol Marcus (the inventor of Project Genesis nearly a century earlier) from her lonely prison planet things have reached breaking point. The crew of the Enterprise and a band of valiant Klingons (plus Captain's Picard's Bolian barber Mot) are hot on the heels of the enemies - but who are they, or what are they and where do they come from? Time is running out fast for our heroes to try to think up ways to combat an unseen and genocidal enemy. Can they save the Romulan Empire and Earth's Federation planets - and what are those dastardly Romulans up to anyway?

When I shut the first book of the pair last November I was horrified to read that I would have to wait until April 2001 to read the next part! Now anybody else who was in the same position can heave a sigh of relief and reach for what I found an exciting and taut tale populated with familiar characters and some new faces as well. I've read Star Trek stories with more plot strands and complex character relationships but if you want a straightforward and stirring adventure story then this certainly fits the bill.
