Respected SF author Greg Bear turns his attention to the Star Wars phenomenon and this is the impressive result: a direct follow-on of The Phantom Menace prequel. The young Obi-Wan Kenobi is training Anakin Skywalker as a Jedi but his charge's mind is clouded with shadows of his past as a slave and his mother who is still enslaved on his home planet. He has great talent but what he enjoys the best is competing in dangerous sports and this book starts with him doing just that in a breathless description of a thrilling race. But both of them have a mission to find the mysterious planet of Zonama Sekot where the fastest ships are made in some secret way and secure one but all is not so straightforward as their enemies are also on their way to do just that.

This book kicks off wonderfully with the race sequence and Bear's considerable imagination comes into play during the scenes when the ship is being created. I would say that the main fault of this book is its flat ending, which comes as a disappointment after such a gripping start and continuation. This tale certainly fits in well with the film and Bear has added some new aliens which manage to be imaginative without being cute - for me the films' only true failing. If you enjoy Star Wars then this is an impressive tale.bar the final chapters.
