Julia Sage August was a special child. She had raven-black hair, pale skin and her eyes were a deep, sapphire blue. They sparkled with a power that intimidated anyone on whom she turned her stare. She was also physically strong, even though she was still a child, stronger than most men. But she was also very lonely.

She had no friends, for the children followed the lead of the class bully, Jamie Clark. He called her a witch and a freak. Then, one day, while the teacher was talking to the principal in the hall, Jamie made the mistake of calling Sage a witch and said she had killed her mother. Sage gave him a beating that put him in the hospital.

Sage's mother, Julia Diane, had died moments after Sage was born. Julia was the Jewel, as her mother, Julia Christine had been. But there was room in the world for only one Jewel at a time, so each time a Jewel was born, her mother died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter. Each had the first name of Julia and, with the exception of Sage's mother, was called by her middle name. Each was special in her own way and had a mission to protect the weak and innocent. But what was Sage to do?

BLESSED BE THE JEWEL is a story of a line of thirteen women who all had the same characteristics. It is a tale of abuse and sacrifice and of overcoming adversity. I find it disturbing in one respect. It seems to say that a Christian might be called to serve other gods and practice witchcraft. Nothing could be further from the truth. God does not ever ask one of His own to do something He abhors. But then, that's why we call them fantasies.
