Joyfully married, awaiting the birth of his first children, on an extended (if belated) honeymoon, domestic serenity seems to have found him. Stop! Reality check! This is Miles we're talking about; nothing is ever easy, serene, or even normal for him. At the end of his and Ekaterin's honeymoon, Miles receives an urgent mission from Emperor Gregor. Seems simple; all he needs to do is zip over to Graf Station and settle a simple trade-snafu-turned-diplomatic-nightmare. After all, as Gregor's youngest (and most enterprising) Auditor, Miles specializes in both snafus and nightmares. Even he has no idea just how many problems are about to fall onto his shoulders

Once on Graf Station, Miles tries to sort out hostilities between the resident Quaddies and visiting Komarrans and Barrayarans. The Quaddies have locked the station down and are holding all ships after violence between their citizens and the Komarrans. The traders are agitated and anxious to move their cargo, the Quaddies are angry and looking for justice and Miles is quickly baffled. There are far too many unanswered (and seemingly unanswerable) questions. Why has this situation gotten out of hand so quickly? What do the Cetagandans have to do with the situation? Who is trying to kill Miles and old friend Bel Thorne? And will Miles and Ekaterin make it home in time for the birth of their children?
