This is the first book in a series that charts the adventures of the crew of the USS da Vinci, a crack team of experts from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. It is their job to explore alien starships, fix all types of technical problems, and help clean up and repair after the Dominion War. Headed by Captain David Gold, they have four adventures in this first book exploring more than one starship, both alien and a derelict hundred-year-old Starfleet model, fix a planet-sized computer, and get mixed up in various disputes with some new races. Until the publication of this novel, these stories existed as ebooks, so join the SCE as they boldly go where they certainly haven't on television.

One of the features of books is the fact that they can do just that and in this one we have an eight-legged alien as part of the crew who ought to be described in more detail if she isn't to exist as just a cipher. I personally would have preferred more variety in these adventures, as more than one is based around exploring a derelict ship and finding bodies; this kept making me feel I was reading the same tale twice. The character of the Bynar 101 is probably the most interesting, although the humans keep up a lively enough dialogue and as we learn more about them as they reveal themselves as being an engaging group that certainly stand closer inspection in further books

Having four separate stories isn't as successful, I didn't feel, as having one long one as it didn't allow for a good plot to develop that would exploit the characters to the full. The final story is the first half of a two-parter featuring the Tholians, which was just hotting up nicely towards the end. This gripe aside, I enjoyed this book and certainly want to read the next one; I love the idea of a ship crewed by these fix-it miracle workers and hope that some day soon they will get put into a full-length novel.
