The story of Sevenwaters, that began with the book, DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST, continues in SON OF THE SHADOWS. Sorcha's children have come of age, and begin fighting their own battles in Druidic Ireland. Battles are fought on many levels, as Sorcha's oldest daughter, Nimah, falls in love with a forbidden Druid apprentice and is forced to marry another. Sorcha's son, the heir to Sevenwaters, battles to free his fiancee who has been locked away in a dark and forbidding castle by a yet unidentified traitor. Sorcha's youngest daughter, Liadan, has given her heart and soul to the dreaded Painted Man, and battles both her own heart and her family. Yet, these battles are not as threatening to the survival of Sevenwaters as are the secrets that each of them carry and refuse to reveal.

Marillier displays the same fine writing skills in SON OF THE SHADOWS that she did in her debut novel, DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST. She is one of the rare writers that possesses the ability to weave the supernatural with the natural in a way that makes even the most arcane events seem common, ordinary, and totally believable. In addition, Marillier also possesses the ability to make the reader laugh and cry. One of the death scenes in the book is so well written that you not only feel both Liadan's and the Painted Man's agony for a lost friend, but also sorrow over a life lost too soon and too needlessly.

I loved both these books, and can't wait for the sequel, CHILD OF THE PROPHECY to come out in March. My only regret, then, will be that the Sevenwaters Trilogy will be complete, and the story of Sorcha and her family will be over. Hopefully, Marillier will then start a new series, and I will be able to enjoy more of this great writer's works in the future.
