I always admire those who can
write short stories and all these writers have the knack, managing to
give a brief but telling tale in the minimum of words. This is the fifth
of the compilations of Star Trek stories written by fans themselves, and
the winning entries for a yearly competition, details of which are at
the back of the book.
Here are stories that span all five of the Star Trek incarnations, including
Enterprise. There are new slants on favorite episodes, told from the point
of view of a different character (including the winning entry which gives
a fresh look at the original series' most popular story. Find out about
Captain Archer's first alien encounter and Seven of Nine's human family,
smile at Dr Chaotica and Dixon Hill, get a glimpse into Sarek's mind and
discover what happens when a whole cargo hold of tribbles fall into the
hands of the Borg. I particularly enjoyed Robert T Jeshonek's The Shoulders
of Giants, where various visits from different ships across the centuries
affect an alien race. I don't think that there has ever been a TV series
that has inspired so much admiration and inspired so many fans to write
fan fiction - long may it grace our screens and continue to motivate viewers
to create compilations like this enjoyable one.
