Worlds
Enough & Time Reviewed
by Jo Rogers, MyShelf.Com Originally published in hardcover in May 2002 by Subterranian, Worlds Enough & Time contains five stories by veteran science fiction author Dan Simmons. In the first story, Looking for Kelly Dahl, Simmons tells the tale of an alcoholic former teacher who is hunted by a former student. It begins when he tries to kill himself, but he lives over it. Kelly Dahl is the former student who tells Mr. Jakes he has to find her before she will stop. In Orphans of the Helix, Mr. Simmons returns us to the culture he created in Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion. This is the story of the humans who broke free of the Aeneans and entered a deep sleep ship to find another place to settle. The race of people they encounter and help on the way makes a fascinating tale. The Ninth of Av is a tale of racism we should not ignore, while On K2 With Kanakerades is a tale of mountain climbing adventure with an alien. The last story, The End of Gravity, is a story of life, death and space travel with a twist from Dan Simmons at his best. Each
of these five stories and the collection itself is preceded by introductions.
Most times, introductions are tedious and unnecessary. In this case, the
introductions are essential to the understanding, and therefore the enjoyment
of the stories. And these are stories you, the reader, will enjoy. |
